Steering Committee
The Steering Committee is the coordinating committee of the Network comprised of officers, sub-committee leaders and other members of the Network with an interest in serving on the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee will organize meetings of the membership, review and update bylaws as needed, coordinate the efforts of subcommittees, and manage the budget.
Network Communications
The Network Communications sub-committee facilitates cross-campus collaboration for effective communication of advising needs; information and resources. This group is responsible for maintaining the communications of the Network, including but not limited to, the Network website, e-newsletter and listserve.
Brown Bag Advisor Series
Brown Bags are designed to assist faculty and staff members, particularly those who advise students, in providing accurate information and making appropriate referrals when advising students. Brown bags are generally held once per month over the lunch hour at one of the KU unions. Participants are invited to bring their lunch. Each session covers a particular topic, with a speaker or panel providing information and then offering an opportunity for questions and discussion. Past Brown Bags included topics such as Thematic Learning Communities, Communicating Effectively with Parents of Students, FERPA, Qualified Admissions, Financial Aid/Scholarships, Transfer Issues, Advising International Students, and many others.
Advisor Awards
The Advising Awards sub-committee works on making sure that advisors on campus are acknowledged for their work. We have been able to give out six awards the past two years to some very deserving advisors. This sub-committee will continue to do this work plus help gather more input from students, staff and faculty. This is one area of the advising network that allows participation across the campus and helps us to gain recognition for advisors and the areas where advising occurs.
Graduate Advising
The Graduate Advising sub-committee focuses on issues particular to masters and doctoral students. Membership on this subcommittee is open to those who advise graduate students throughout campus. The group meets bi-monthly. The objective of this group is to stay current on issues affecting graduate students and to learn about the resources offered to this population.
Ad-Hoc Committees
Ad-hoc committees will be formed as deemed appropriate by the active members of the Network with final approval of the Steering Committee. Past ad-hoc committees have included topics on advising & new student orientation and guest speakers.
